Supporting & Sustaining the Local Economy/Employment
We support a local and sustainable economy that offers a living wage as our standard local minimum wage (as established by the Alternatives Federal Credit Union). We support the increased employment of Union contractors from the Ithaca area to complete city constructions. We also support the employment of locally based people for the City of Ithaca positions from seasonal maintenance to Police dept. with a specific focus on diversifying the workforce as it currently exist.
We support the existing and new development of alternative business organizations, businesses and chambers of commerce that come from and support the development of business and commerce in and for our disenfranchised communities.
Ideas on Employment: More local healthy markets, competent appointments to the diversity committee and the reestablishment of the Affirmative Action Committee (to address concerns with education and employment with a specific focus on supporting women, African Americans, Latino/a Americans and other disenfranchised ethnicities, spiritualities and sexualities).
We propose the installation of compensatory structures that empower the imposition of financial accountability upon violators of civil and human rights in the workplace and educational system. Revenues resulting from the imposition of fines hereby imposed shall be paid into the treasury of the City of Ithaca and shall be credited to and deposited in the general city fund. The collected funds will be utilized in support of employment and small business development in and for our disenfranchised communities (based on the model of the “Ithaca Housing Trust Fund”- Chapter 62 of the Ithaca City Code).
We support collaboration between the “Ithaca chamber of commerce” and City of Ithaca to offer trainings and ongoing support for the development of a diversity of business coalitions in Ithaca.
We support the utilization of state and national funds to educate, train and employ the local community to refurbish the City buildings of Ithaca with eco-friendly and sustainable energy alternatives (i.e. cold frame installations to all city building, solar paneling on roof tops of city building, etc.).
We support the development and sustenance of alternative medicinal organizations as a profitable, accessible and ethical market and employment base (i.e. Ithaca Health Alliance and Ithaca Free Health Clinic).
