Protecting Our Community from Physical and Emotional abuse (Keeping us Safe)
We will support a police force that works ethically to serve all the people of our community in equity. Within the power appointed to the local political system we will utilize our representative powers to support the employment of humane and compassionate police officials and other police personnel. In addition, the police advisory board will be encouraged to be made up of a diverse and representative body of city residents. We will work with the police advisory board to amend bylaws (city code) to implement a real system of accountability for injustice done to Ithaca city residents.*
We support a process that empowers people to make a formal complaint about injustice, discrimination and abuse that will be investigated by the “Police Advisory Board” {Peoples Protection Committee/Affirmative Action Committee} and ultimately that allows for sanctions to be imposed in defense of victims.
Essentially, we propose the installation of compensatory structures that empower the imposition of financial accountability upon violators of civil and human rights. Revenues resulting from the imposition of fines hereby imposed shall be paid into the treasury of the City of Ithaca and shall be credited to and deposited in the general fund. The city funds will be used to fund the expansion of power and responsibilities for the “Police Advisory Board”, to support community agencies that address the physical and emotional abuse of women and for cultural competency and sensitivity training.
*We suggest the expansion of the Police Advisory Board to all institutions in the City of Ithaca that are considered agencies of justice.
